ATP 250 Metz: Musseti beat Corda, good performance but it wasn’t enough

Play a good game and receive Lorenzo Mossetti, but his class and touch of the ball were not enough to defeat Sebastian Korda’s aggressiveness, progression and attacking tendency. The Tuscans leave the scene in the second round of the ATP 250 in Metz, lost 6-3 7-6 (6) by the American, at the end of a match for “high-end” tastes on the French indoor court.. Both displayed precious pieces of their repertoire, technically at a high level, to create an interesting contrast in style, with many combative and entertaining exchanges. In the end, the match was played on very few points. In the first set, Blue paid for the only match in which he conceded two break points, succumbing to the second set with a bad double-fault. In the second set, Musseti could complain about being restarted after stretching 2-0. There he probably made the only real mistakes in the whole match, not so much in terms of execution as in terms of “concept”. With the enthusiasm of a positive moment, and with the American being a bit loathsome and hasty, he somewhat fell into the frenzy of wanting to close the exchanges with a nice winner, with an “exclamation point”. He exaggerated on several occasions, with excessive risks, which eventually paid off with the counter-break. The group then continued to balance, with moments of remarkable tennis for both, until the tiebreak where Lorenzo cut the tiebreak for the first time, immediately succumbing to a strong (and high-quality) reaction from the opponent, good at playing. Win the match.

All in all, applause for Korda, who in perfect playing conditions on the indoor court showed her remarkable ability to accelerate using luxurious geometric shapes. But also for Mussetti, who left the field but with a more than decent performance. In tennis, sometimes, the opponent simply plays better in the crucial stages and deserves success. Lorenzo can only blame himself for a few points not played with tactical proficiency (but a creative like him is right to try, without exaggerating), and also the first ball he got so little from, especially in the key stages of the match. Here his growth must pass: improving the percentage of priorities on the field and the overall quality of the shot, to get more direct points and to have a more offensive position on the field in their matches.

Match report.

The match with Korda begins at the pub, but it is Musetti who immediately puts on the show with a cute passerby in the running. After a double foul caught Sebastian’s serve, the result of the match passes to the merits. The first match Lorenzo was more comfortable, he pushes safely and 15 takes 1 equal. The first tears of the match come in the fourth inning. From 40 to 15, the Blue suffers from Corda’s aggressiveness and perfect geometry, slightly exaggerating the push with a backhand. He saves the first ball (Sebastian’s right into the net), but he suffers a break in the second, with a disgusting double fault. 3-1 and Korda’s service, good at pushing precisely to enter the field thus boosting the advantage over 4-1. Moments of tennis quality, both have an elegant and offensive game, and are more consistent than the American game. The group runs fast in the serve rounds, Musetti also went up with the first ball, but in response to 5-3 he and his back to the wall, he must risk the partial reopening. In the 15th minute, all that wastes his response to the American’s second serve, blocking the ball a lot and ending up in the net. With the first two base points in the group you reach Korda. The former squanders in search of an unexpected serve and shot; Converts the second that causes the error to the response. 6-3 Corda partially worthy overall, more solid and good at exploiting one of the two break points obtained, without conceding anything to the blues.

Lorenzo starts the second set to serve, but Korda immediately stings with a deadly response. The match was stopped for two minutes after two points, in the stands the spectator receives assistance. The “muzzle” doesn’t distract him, he wins the first match and stings in response, very precisely with forehands (including a long line passing that extends nicely). He breaks first break points in favor of the match at 15-40 and takes the break, with his own swing, powerful and accurate. 2-0 Musseti, for the first time in the game. The level of play is very good on both sides. Lorenzo is too confident in his backhand ballistic skills, missing a few shots that cost him a break point. If he plays it well, this time with a deep, gentle forehand full of spin, causing Sebastian’s foul. Another longline backhand error, too little, cost him the second break point, and this time the break is there, I hit a forehand a little late. 2-1 Musseti, but now Korda is needed. There comes a sensitive moment for the blue, some mistakes too many, and the American instead is too aggressive. In 2 all Lorenzo conceded a break point, with the first ball on the line saved. The gameplay is still good, with a few bugs but both are risky in acceleration, open the field (especially Corda) with tight corners and go into the long dash. Pushing gradually and more towards the net, the Italian suddenly changes his pace. Mussetti goes 5-4, Korda sends to stay in the group. Despite a disastrous shot, the American affected the 5th equally. Lorenzo takes risks in response, and puts pressure on Sebastian to work under 6-5, but he doesn’t shiver. He goes into the tiebreak after 56 minutes in the set. The second point is exceptional, an interchange played with changes in pace and acceleration by both, closed by an interesting touch of Corda under the net. very well. Turns to 3, with a winner along the line with the right of the American. The first service error is that with Korda, the correct long interchange line does not pass through the network. 3-4 and “Snout” service. Denial point Sebastian recovers with force, superb attack with sure smashing. With another fun exchange, and above all a great run on the net, Lorenzo goes 5-4. Korda, with an ace in the T, goes 6-5 and first point of the match, doesn’t shiver in response. First excellent outside ball, Lorenzo earns 6 all. Unfortunately in the next point the first does not enter and exit the second outer curve. According to the MP, this time in service, for Korda. Peter’s son closes with service and right. A deserved victory, but Musseti also played a good game, turning into a few points. Korda awaits the winner of Sonego vs. Simon. Mussetti leaves the scene with a good performance, it was not enough.
